A thin white line crosses the black hole on the page. All around it vivid dots in tempera give the impression of fluorescent bulbs. Then a yellow circle. The sun? The moon? A spotlight? We hear the trot of a white horse entering the scene and then the roll of drums and a gasp from a crowd we cannot see. There she is, beautiful in her white tutu and holding a green paper parasol, the red-haired tightrope walker. We can only catch a glimpse of her by peeking through the keyhole of Celestino Piatti’s world.
